The Qero people, with a population of around 4,000 and considered the last remnant of the Inca civilization, do not yet have a situation diagnosis that clearly shows the frequency of anemia and malnutrition in children and mothers. In 2021, a study was carried out in the Chua-Chua area thanks to a project carried out with the support of GIZ-Peru Amazónico eV and led by Yenny Ramerth. This study served as the basis for building a bridge with the University of Dresden and M.Sc. Lissy Jilek, who was responsible for data processing in Chua-Chua and who will continue this new research for the other six sites.
The project aims to carry out three periodic campaigns (in 2022) on the need to maintain oral health and outpatient care for children in the communities of the Qero Nation, especially in the communities of Hatun Qero and Qiqo. The activity will be carried out through strategic alliances with private medical practices in the city of Cusco, in collaboration with the Health Center of Paucartambo.
The main objective of the project is to develop a program to improve and diversify nutrition in about 5 villages of the Qero nation, where children suffer from malnutrition and anemia at a rate of over 80%, managed by the teachers of the neighboring educational centers and the mothers of the families grouped in APAFAS.

Feuchtgebiete in den Hochanden spielen eine wichtige Rolle bei der Speicherung und Regulierung des flussabwärts fließenden Wassers, bieten Weideland für das Hausvieh, liefern Pflanzenfasern, Nahrungsmittel und Brennmaterial für die lokalen Gemeinschaften, binden einen großen Teil des Kohlenstoffs und stellen ein unschätzbares kulturelles Erbe dar.
Die Zielgruppe sind Mädchen und junge Frauen bis zu 17 Jahren, deren Erwerbsbeteiligung bei etwa 95 % liegt. Sie arbeiten in der Landwirtschaft und Viehzucht für den Kleinsthandel, die Subsistenz und den Eigenverbrauch, ihre Arbeit ist unbezahlt und ihre Lebensbedingungen sind völlig abhängig. Mädchen unter 14 Jahren sind sehr oft für die Betreuung ihrer jüngeren Geschwister verantwortlich. Infolgedessen erreichen fast 90 % der Mädchen nur das dritte Jahr der Grundschule. Derzeit haben 97 % nicht die Möglichkeit, lesen und schreiben zu lernen. Ein Umstand, der sie vom allgemeinen Wirtschafts- und Arbeitsmarkt ausschließt. Außerdem ist die Zahl der Teenagerschwangerschaften mit einem Durchschnittsalter von 15 Jahren hoch. Mit einem Kind verheiratet zu sein, schränkt ihre Chancen auf den Zugang zur Sekundarbildung stark ein.
This project represents the second phase of our intervention, which began this year 2023 with the project “Empowerment of women of the indigenous community “Q’ero Nation” through training as classifiers of alpaca wool”, also promoted by the Schmitz Foundations. Initially there were 20 women who were trained to classify alpaca fiber, at the end of the project there will be 50 trained women from different communities
The project is the second part of an overall measure that aims to set up an educational center in the municipality of Lucre for the collection, sale and shipping of alpaca wool. Sub-project 2 includes the shell of the educational center and affects the families of alpaca breeders in all 5 municipalities of the nation of Qero (approx. 3,000 people). The shell construction measures in accordance with Peruvian building regulations take into account protection against earthquakes and include the excavation, the foundation, the supporting structure and the roof, but not yet any masonry.

Disadvantage of women continues from generation to generation.
In order to improve the economic situation of alpaca breeders and at the same time to improve the position of women in society, 20 women were trained as classifiers in 2022 as part of a project. By classifying the wool of an alpaca, a higher sales price can be achieved for the higher quality part, while the lower quality part is used for personal use.
Despite the qualifications they have acquired, the classifiers are not accepted by the middlemen. The reason for this is that the women appear as individuals and cannot act in the form of a registered organization.
The pandemic has left many children in the Andean region of the Qero Nation without the opportunity to continue their education and has prevented the digital infrastructure in this area from developing due to the difficult accessibility and the extreme poverty of the population. In collaboration with the community authorities and parents, an internet antenna was installed and a small digital skills development program was developed for children and parents in the community of Qiqu, which belongs to the Qero Nation.
